A Quick Look At Bharti Airtel’s Progress In Africa

Bharti Airtel is planning to increase its subscriber base by one fourth of its actual value in this year. This decision was taken keeping in mind the growing demand for data services said company’s managing director on Wednesday.

Bharti, is very much looking forward to win market share in various places of Africa such as South Africa’s MTN Group and Kenya’s Safaricom. It is spending $250 million on network upgrade and expansion in Zambia, said Fayaz King. He also said that the Airtel Zambia’s subscribers reached 4.2 million in December. This is an increase of about 24% from the present value in 2011.

The company launched a high-speed 3.75G network, to boost data penetration that is still under 7 percent in the southern African country on Tuesday. While Airtel Zambia has the largest subscriber base in Zambia, MTN stands second with 2.7 million followed by Zamtel, with 1 million customers. Majority of the Zamtel is owned by Libya’s LAP Green Networks.
