Microalgae Biodiesel Powered SUV Test Driven By CSIR Scientists In India

An SUV car driven by biodiesel extracted from the microalgae found in the marine bodies was revealed by the scientists. Science and Technology Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh is proud to say that, this experiment was quite successful and this biodiesel sports utility vehicle car may the alternative to diesel for all the car manufacturing companies in near future.

The biodiesel was produced from the microalgae found in the West Coast of India and it was specially prepared by Central Salt Marine and Chemical Research Institute, located at Bhavnagar. The microalgae grow in either side of the marine or freshwater areas. They are the primary producers in the oceans that convert water and carbon dioxide to biomass and oxygen in the presence of sunlight.

The scientists tool a test drive of it and found that it is consuming 20% biodiesel and 80% regular fuel. This project was initiated in April 2010 under the New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITI) by the Council of Scientific Research (CSIR) in association with Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
