Star Bags Rights To Cricket Matches In India For The Next 6 Years

Amidst high competition, Rupert Murdoch’s Star network has won the media rights from the Board of Control for Cricket in India at whopping cost of Rs. 3,851Crore. It was a close call after at the end after the association revealed the bids; Multi-screen media was on the line which quoted Rs. 3,700Crore.

The contract also involves finishing the time Nimbus communications are left over with, i.e. two years from now. We already know that BCCI scrapped the deal worth Rs.2000Crore with Nimbus communications citing some apprehensions.

Total contract period is for 6 years covering 96 matches in India and bringing huge profits for BCCI. Cost per match is now Rs.40Crore when compared to Rs.32.35Crore received from Nimbus. Well, domestic cricket has also got some recognition now; the contract also involves covering domestic tournaments like the Ranji trophy and the Duleep trophy.

For the record, Star, ESPN software, Multi Screen Media, Times network and Zee took up the bid documents but only Star and Multi Screen have submitted them.
