Import Of Power Equipments To Be Banned In India?

The heavy industries ministry wants Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop the use of foreign equipment in ultra mega power projects. He said it is necessary to satisfy and serve the needs of domestic companies. He also expected that UMPPs bidders should get their equipment from domestic companies or enterprises that have an India origin.

However, the power ministry, Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde hadn’t approved it yet as country is already struggling to meet its capacity addition target that has been pared twice during the current Eleventh Five-Year Plan. But, out of the four UPMM (Unified Project Management Methodology)s approved till now, only one which is promoted by the Tata Company has started its partial production.

Heavy industries minister Praful Patel has discussed with both the PM and Power minister on this very own proposal of his. If at all the proposal passes, foreign companies and equipment suppliers to various mega projects will have to sign up an agreement to set up manufacturing base in a phased manner.
