BSNL and MTNL seek bailout for Spectrum Fee burden

Two companies had seek bailout package to fund their one-time spectrum fee burden. These companies two company is namely Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. After an empowered Group of Ministers decided to impose a free on incumbent players with excess spectrum, these companies had faced a payout of about Rs 10,000.

The group had decided to collect a levy from all operators that had more than 4.4 Mhz of GSM spectrum and 2.5 Mhz of CDMA spectrum. This decision was finalized during their meeting last week. Bad news for both BSNL and MTNL since both of them are running spectrum with excess GSM on all the circles they operate.

With the financial problem that most companies are facing right now, definitely BSNL is not in the possible of being able to pay for the additional amount for retention. This information was given by their chairman and managing director, R.K. Upadhyay.
