With the 6% hike, the Social and Developmental sector spending will amount to around Rs. 5.52 lakh crore. The plan spending will be spent and allocated on a number of large Government social intervention schemes including Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment guarantee Act, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and National Rural Health Mission.

This increase in the allocation of developmental spending implies that expenditure in other ministries will either remain the same or may increase to a small extent.

In the previous financial year 2012-2013, the government increased the social and developmental expenditure plan by 18% to Rs. 5.21 lakh crore from Rs. 4.41 Lakh crore in 2010-2011.
