With more than 56,000 women dying every year in India because of pregnancy related problems and
complications, it was very necessary on part of the Government to take major steps to curb down the
death figure resulting from pregnancy complications.
Taking a major initiative in this regard, the Government of India launched Janani Shishu Suraksha
Karyakram (JSSK) in June 2011.
Under this scheme, all the states have been asked to provide completely free and cash less services
to all pregnant women and sick new born babies (up to 30 days after birth) in both urban and rural
government health institutions.
Under this scheme, pregnant women will be provide free cashless delivery whether normal or caesarean
operations, free drugs, diagnostics, blood provision, free diet, free transport facility from home to
Health institution and even drop back facility.
Sick new born babies will be provided free treatment, free drugs, and free diagnostics and other free
entitlements up to 30 days after birth.
