Spoken Web Service For Farmers In India Coming Soon

60% of the total population of India still depends on agriculture for a living. The Ministry of Earth Sciences and the IT giant IBM have planned to design a dedicated agromet (agriculture meteorological), a spoken web service for farmers where they can get their agriculture and weather-related questions answered

They have already provided a similar service to connect farmers to Amul Diary. Though a service was already available which gives information through SMS and IVRS, through this sevice farmers will be able to get information and clarify their doubts as said by Shailesh Nayak, secretary in the ministry.

India Meteorological Department (IMD, is also involved to give notifications on the weather report while organizations like the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture (Central and State) and State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) will provide weather-based agro advises.

It is estimated by National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) that success of this scheme will give an economic benefit of Rs.211,000 crore annually.
