Essar Power is planning to enter the electricity distribution business and become an integrated power company. Essar Group spokesperson told that the company has already applied for licenses in both Maharashtra and Bihar. However a final decision and bidding commitment will be made only after a
detailed analysis of the opportunity.

Essar Power to get into Electricity Distribution in India

A license application was sent to Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), Mumbai and company is looking forward to applying in other cities also. The application is still in its preliminary stage. Essar Power has installed a total generation capacity of 1,600 MW. As part of the joint venture agreement, Essar Power acquired 76% stake in Navbharat Power Pvt Ltd.

The company would execute projects of nearly 2,000 MW capacity and is determined to reach a capacity of 9,670 MW by 2014 in various stages of implementation. Though there was no agreement made, Essar Steel is interested in selling its 1.8% stake in Essar Power to Essar Holdings.
